The Adaptive Backlight is a retrofit kit that replaces the CCFL backlight tube originally installed on the Game Gear. It provides even backlighting across the entire screen surface while consuming significantly less power than the original backlight.

It is an LED backlight module equipped with a diffuser derived from those used to backlight smartphone screens, all glued on a printed circuit board designed by RetroKAI.

The circuit board contains a microprocessor AT-Mega 8 in which is uploaded a firmware that allows the management of the backlight level according to the keys pressed.
